Unique Challenge of Chinese (Art) Copyright Infringer

A friend of mine suffered copyright theft from Chinese imitators and my conversation with her led me to many artists from here in Vancouver who suffered the same fate. I was shocked, especially when you think that what is happening here could be happening in many other cities. So this story amused me in that the artist got some revenge. He found his imitator selling his rip off work on eBay!

These people just want your money.

I get too many things like this because of my profile as a writer/teacher in the visual arts. The other thing I get often, is emails asking my advice about accepting the offer to be printed in a publication or to be included in a show somewhere impressive. I get the impression that these are all scams. I am NOT saying they are, but I just find that there are far, far too many people out there preying on our vanity and eagerness to be seen and to sell. I say: IGNORE ALL THESE UNSOLICITED INVITATIONS.

College Art Association Podcasts on Professional Development

I am new to podcasts. Since i got my iPad, they have become of interest to me to listen to as I commute and travel. The College Art Association of New York, has a series of podcasts on professional development here. Be warned: they are developed in the context of the American visual artist and life in the USA. However, a large percentage of the content is relevant to Canadian artists all artists with a goal to exhibit in the US.

Lawrence Lowe

FYI: A very short film interview I did with filmmaker David Cooper about master drawer, Lawrence Lowe. Another post will be of wondrous painter, Roselina Hung. Both artists are very shy and they interest me, as such, because self-advocacy and self-promotion are harder for artists like them. I have found that introversion is a very common trait in the visual arts and so I have been talking with artists like them in order to see how they can best advance their careers in a competitive landscape.

Annual Review

An artist I met through a workshop and whose work (and person) I admire very much, is Rachael Ashe. She recently wrote a very interesting post on her blog about her progress as an artist risking full-time employment solely on her creative practice. On this post she also lists measurable objectives for the upcoming year. This is an excellent simple business plan and review and something every artist would be wise to do.

Sorry for the Lack of Posts

I regret that I am not able to maintain this blog at a rate of posting I had hoped to achieve when I started it. The reason for the low amount of posts is because I am in the finishing stages of my second text book on visual art career management. my second book, Making It: Case Studies of Successful Canadian Artists is just a couple of weeks away from being finished. Once done, the posts will improve and increase in number. A guy can only do so much.
